BILOXI, Miss. -- The Mississippi State University Extension Service invites volunteers to participate in the rescheduled 2019 annual Mississippi Coastal Cleanup Nov. 16.

Volunteers will remove litter from 30 sites across Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties beginning at 8 a.m. A complimentary lunch will be provided after the cleanup ends at 11 a.m.

A site captain at each cleanup location will provide gloves, bags and other tools. Participants will collect data to categorize the major sources of marine debris entering the coastal environment. Site captains will present a ticket to each volunteer at the end of the cleanup for the lunch and a raffle drawing at the lunch location in each county.

Volunteers can sign up individually or as groups.

This will be the 31st year of the event, which was originally scheduled for late October and postponed due to rain.

During the 2018 cleanup, 2,649 volunteers joined the effort, covering 50 miles of coastline and filling 1,059 bags with 20,756 pounds of trash.
