MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Shoppers hoping to find something different in the new millennium may be disappointed to find women's fashions reminiscent of the 1970s, but they will be relieved to find more feminine influences returning.

"The fashions for this spring and summer can best be described as retro 1970s," said Everlyn Johnson, apparel and textile project leader with Mississippi State University's Extension Service. "Many of the looks made famous by the `Charlie's Angels' television show will be returning."

Some of those fashions include printed scarves, halter tops, fitted pant suits, soft denims, sandals, dropped waists, wider lapels, sashes, tight leathers and envelope purses. Fitted silhouettes will include ribbed knit tops, slim skirts, fitted jackets and skinny belts.

Johnson said the women in the workforce influenced the 1970s with masculine styles. This year's versions demonstrate that women are more comfortable in the workplace with softer, more fitted fashions.

"Shirtdresses will be big news this spring and summer, and some will be available in a variety of fabrics, some that are light and sheer," Johnson said. "Look for flared and tailored coat dresses as well."

The clothing specialist said shawl collars, cuffed sleeves and double-breasted closures will be common this year. Embellishments including embroidery, textured weaving and beading will gain prominence.

"Look for edge trim on garments and on accessories," Johnson said. "Increased focus on hems will occur with trim, ruffles, braid and borders that often extend for 5 to 7 inches above the normal hem edge. There will be some irregular hemlines and asymmetrical edges. Capri length pants will stop inches above the ankles."

In addition to the use of logos on clothing, animal prints will remain strong.

"The must-have color for the season is blue, in a variety of shades, tints, intensities and combinations," Johnson said. "There is a reason black and white are considered classics; you can always find them. In addition to neutral colors, an array of spring and summer colors will remind you of tropical flowers and fruits. Some shades will be more like sherberts such as pistachio, melon, mint, lime, lemon and orange."

Fabrics for the season can be unconventional, daring and adventurous in lifestyle and wardrobe.

"Natural fibers will be led by cottons including lightweight denim, gingham and Oxford cloth. Cotton knits will offer optimum comfort and a variety of looks," Johnson said. "Lightweight linen will be a highly sought-after fabric this spring and summer."
