Luncheon and tour promote state's rice
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Diners who come to sample some of the hundreds of dishes at the 16th annual rice luncheon in Cleveland also can take part in a tour of Mississippi rice fields to see where their meal began.
The meal will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at Delta State University’s Walter Sillers Coliseum.
Don Respess, Bolivar County director for Mississippi State University’s Extension Service, said the 2 p.m. tour is a new addition to the event that attracts more than 1,000 people each September marking National Rice Month.
More than 300 dishes prepared by rice-growing families and Delta restaurants will be available for sampling. Most of the recipes served are available in “Between the Levees,” a local cookbook that will be on sale. Door prizes, exhibits and the Bolivar County 4-H Fashion Modeling Squad will be part of the event.
Luncheon tickets are $2 and will be sold at the door or may be purchased in advance throughout the Delta at Farm Bureau and Extension Service offices. For more information, call the Bolivar County Extension Office at (662) 843-8371.
