MSU, state garden clubs hold design symposium
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- A former landscape architecture professor at Mississippi State University who influenced many professionals in the business today is coming back to campus to participate in a program he began in 1955.
The MSU Department of Landscape Architecture and the Garden Clubs of Mississippi Inc. will hold the 53rd Edward C. Martin Design Symposium Oct. 15 on campus at the Bost Center auditorium. The morning event is open to the general public and will feature presentations from Martin and current faculty member Robert Brzuszek. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the program starts at 9 a.m.
Martin, who holds the rank of professor emeritus, is coauthor of the award-winning book “Home Landscapes, Planting Design and Management.” He is a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and has served as design chair for the National Council of State Garden Clubs. He conducted the symposium for 50 continuous years until 2005.
“Ed Martin has been a pivotal figure in landscape architecture in Mississippi, and we are excited to bring him back home to Mississippi State,” Brzuszek said.
Martin’s presentations will address the aesthetic and practical functions plants serve in a garden design. He also will explain the principles of selection and placement of nonplant accessories that can complete the overall garden design.
Brzuszek, who is symposium coordinator, will discuss the purposes and functions of plant communities so gardeners can use Mother Nature’s secrets to achieve good design and maintain a healthy environment.
“Many people are interested in gardening and landscaping, and they want information,” Brzuszek said. “Our purpose is to present a quality program with good information for participants to take home.”
