Valentine's gifts should come from the heart
MISSISSIPPI STATE – Valentine’s Day is supposed to be about love and romance, but gift exchanges can leave some sweethearts feeling anxious instead.
Susan Cosgrove, area family resource management agent in Newton County with Mississippi State University Extension Service, said homemade gifts are an inexpensive option and can be even more meaningful than store-bought ones.
“Make a custom calendar or quilt using family photos,” she said. “On the calendar, include all of your family’s important dates, such as birthdays, anniversaries and upcoming events. Quilts also can be made with photos. These are easy, inexpensive items to make. All it takes is a little computer know-how.”
Free time is an especially nice gift for those who are always putting the family’s needs before their own.
“Offer to do chores around the house that the other person normally handles so he or she can spend that time doing something enjoyable,” said Teresa Lyle, family resource management agent in Leake County. “Make a book of coupons that includes things you will do for the other person, like doing the laundry for one month, washing the dishes for one month, washing the truck three times, vacuuming the house and bathing the dogs. If your significant other usually handles meals, offer to do all the shopping and cooking for a week.”
Staying home and enjoying each other’s company is another inexpensive option.
“Cook something special, like your favorite dishes, and rent movies to watch at home,” Lyle said. “Or make simple snacks to eat while enjoying the movie.”
A daytime date can be a great gift and still not break the bank.
“If you would like to treat your Valentine to a meal away from home, consider having a lunch date instead of a dinner date. Lunch menus usually offer less expensive items than dinner menus,” Cosgrove said. “Instead of going to an evening showing of a new release, go to the afternoon matinee.”
