Workshops address deer management
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Mississippi State University is planning four workshops throughout the state to help participants learn how to better manage their land for white-tailed deer.
The workshops are in two-day sets, and participants can register for one or both days. Workshops will be held June 1 in Vicksburg at Hinds Community College and June 2 at the Mahanna Wildlife Management Area Office in Valley Park. The workshops on the MSU campus will be July 13 and 14 at the College of Forest Resources’ Thompson Hall.
Day one will cover management concepts related to white-tailed deer. Topics include setting up a camera survey; deer habitat, nutrition and ecology; food plots; harvest management; and hunter recruitment. Day two covers hands-on management applications. These topics include camera survey picture analysis, food plot management, the science of harvesting deer, scoring antlers, aging deer, and meat handling and processing.
Cost for the workshops is $95 per day or $180 for both days. This fee covers registration, materials, lunch, and a t-shirt or cap. Continuing forestry education credits (5 Category 1-CF hours) are available for registered foresters. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the programs run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Attendance is limited to 70 participants on Day one and 30 on Day two. Registration for the Vicksburg workshops closes May 18. Registration for the MSU sessions closes June 29.
The workshops are offered through the MSU College of Forest Resources, the MSU Extension Service and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. To register or for more information, visit http://www.cfr.msstate.edu/workshops/deer2012.
