Equine program offers therapy for 'heroes'
WEST POINT – Registration is under way for veterans seeking non-traditional animal-assisted activities to address physical or mental challenges as a result of military service.
International Equine Services for Heroes will be offered through the Mississippi State University Extension Service 4-H Therapeutic Riding and Activity Center, which promotes educational and research-based equine activities.
“Some of the many benefits participants can expect include increased mobility, balance, muscle tone and personal empowerment,” said Mary Shannon, therapeutic riding instructor and program coordinator.
Spring sessions are March 25 through May 2 at the Elizabeth A. Howard arena in West Point. Rider applications are available online and are due by Feb. 15. For more information on involvement in the program, contact Shannon at (662) 325-3350 or marys@ext.msstate.edu.
The MSU Extension Service 4-H TRAC program has earned accreditation through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International.
