Farm to School program covered at Feb. field day
GOODMAN – Fruit and vegetable growers can learn how to supply local schools with their produce during a Feb. 21 field day at the Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production Demonstration Farm in Goodman.
Experts from the Mississippi State University Extension Service, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and several partner organizations will help local farmers navigate the process required for selling produce to schools.
“We are working to develop and expand four local Farm to School networks by building even stronger relationships between local farmers and schools,” said Keith Benson, demonstration farm director. “Schools are interested in locally grown food, and local farmers are eager to grow and sell to them. We can help facilitate that process.”
Law school faculty and staff from the University of Mississippi’s Transactional Legal Clinic also will be available for confidential, one-on-one sessions to answer questions and offer business advice.
The field day begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Attendance is free, but preregistration is required. Lunch and materials will be provided.
This field day is the second in a year-long series. Field days are held on the third Friday of each month, February through November. The last field day is scheduled for Dec. 12. Topics range from recordkeeping and marketing to crop selection and equipment maintenance. All field days will be held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The MSU Extension Service and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Alcorn State University Extension Program and the University of Mississippi Transactional Legal Clinic produce the series. The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce and the USDA Specialty Crop Grant Program fund the programs.
