MSU college recognized outstanding instructors
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Faculty and staff in the Mississippi State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences were honored for exemplary service during a recent awards ceremony.
The four faculty honorees, chosen from a field of 217 educators, were recognized for inspiring students both in and out of the classroom. Recipients of the college’s annual teaching awards for 2014 were Shien Lu, Angel Fason, Fred Musser and Charles Freeman.
The college also honored two staff members for their outstanding contributions.
Lu, an associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology, received the college’s Teacher of the Year award and the Excellence in Teaching Upper Division Undergraduate award. A 10-year veteran, Lu engages his students in hands-on learning and has been described as gifted at connecting with students.
Fason, an instructor in the School of Human Sciences, received the Excellence in Teaching Lower Division Undergraduate award. She is described as passionate and enthusiastic about teaching, motivating her students to accomplish their best.
Musser, an associate professor in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology, received the Excellence in Teaching Graduate Instruction award. Also a 10-year veteran, Musser has been described as a transformational teacher. He frequently draws on his international and consulting experience to give students the opportunity to think through the costs and benefits of an issue from various perspectives.
Freeman, an assistant professor in Human Sciences, received the Excellence in Teaching New Faculty award. Freeman, who teaches apparel, textiles and merchandising, helps students look at problems in new ways with innovation and creativity.
In addition to teaching, many of these faculty members have joint appointments with the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and the MSU Extension Service.
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station also honored Sharron Miles and Beth Hathcock at the ceremony. Miles, an administrative assistant in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, received the outstanding support staff award. Hathcock, business manager in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, received the outstanding professional staff award.
