Mississippi Saves Week kicks off Feb. 23
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi Saves will launch its second America Saves Week campaign on Feb. 23 to promote financial responsibility throughout the state.
As part of the national America Saves effort, Mississippians can save money for a rainy day by taking the pledge to become Mississippi Savers.
Rita Green, a family financial management specialist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, said a recent report from the Corporation for Enterprise Development indicated only about 49 percent of Mississippians have savings accounts.
“To help improve these numbers, Mississippi Saves suggests opening a free savings account and aiming for short-term savings goals rather than long-term savings goals,” Green said. “Even saving as little as $20 per week will help keep a short-term goal in sight.”
Green said everyone can take the pledge to save at http://www.mississippisaves.org.
“That commitment is a good first step towards saving for your goal,” she said.
In partnership with America Saves, Mississippi Saves offers social media resources to provide reminders and accountability partners to help members stick to their savings goals. Members can also receive quarterly newsletters and periodic financial information when they take the pledge to save.
Green’s national-award-winning segment, “Your Money Minute,” will air on the following stations during America Saves week:
- WXVT in Greenville
- WCBI in Columbus
- WJTV in Jackson
- MSTV at Mississippi State University
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation sponsored these broadcasts. Mississippi Saves partners include banks, credit unions, credit counselors, the MSU Extension Service, the City of Hattiesburg and the Office of the State Treasurer.
America Saves is a national effort managed by the nonprofit Consumer Federation of America, a group of more than 1,000 nonprofit organizations, government agencies and corporate groups seeking to raise awareness about the importance of saving.
