RAYMOND, Miss. -- Landowners can learn about the use of prescribed fire to manage their property during a Feb. 19 workshop near Raymond.

The Mississippi State University Extension Service, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and the Mississippi Prescribed Fire Council are partnering to offer the event to introduce landowners to the benefits of prescribed burning and how to safely do it.

Topics of the workshop include the ecological impact, weather conditions, smoke management, burning techniques and liability issues. Presenters will demonstrate a live prescribed burn if weather permits.

While this workshop does not certify individuals to burn, attendees can attend the Mississippi Prescribed Fire Burn Manager Certification Course later this spring, said Adam Rohnke, Extension wildlife associate and certified wildlife biologist.

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MSU Brown Loam Branch Experiment Station located southwest of Raymond off of Highway 18 at 1676 Brown Loam Road in Raymond.

Registration costs $10 and includes lunch and materials. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Professional logging managers who attend can earn five continuing education credit hours. Foresters who attend can earn four continuing education credit hours in category 1-CF.
