Mini-grant opportunity helps water stewards
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Community groups with a passion for stewarding their local water resources have the opportunity until Jan. 31, 2025, to apply for a mini-grant to help with their efforts.
The Mississippi State University Extension Service is offering grants up to $5,000 to support one year of community-based water monitoring and outreach efforts. These grants are offered through the Mississippi Water Stewards program to groups in all Mississippi communities, with special emphasis on those in the Jackson metro area.
Beth Baker, a specialist in natural resource conservation in agroecosystems with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, said the mini-grants will help local efforts in monitoring and preserving the quality of local water resources.
“Through the Mississippi Water Stewards program, we are aiming to expand community-based watershed monitoring, with curricula designed to educate citizens about water science, pollution transport, monitoring, stewardship and utilizing data to support local decision-making around water resources,” Baker said.
Community-based organizations with interests in developing a better understanding of local surface water quality will receive these grants. The grants are competitive, and organizations must meet eligibility requirements.
“The overarching goal of our efforts is to build capacity in local communities to understand water quality impairments, advance environmental literacy, increase capacity for monitoring and encourage stewardship in local communities,” Baker said. “This will help to ensure safe and clean water for all Mississippians and to protect our diverse freshwater resources.”
