Worried about termites? If you live in the Southeast and own a house or other building, you should be. Buildings that are not properly protected from termites will eventually be infested by termites, and termite damage can be costly to repair, very costly in some cases. While the cost of having a building properly treated for termites is fairly substantial, it is far lower than the cost of repairing severe termite damage, such as that seen in this photo.
 
Termite treatment is not something that you have to do every year, but it is something that you should think about every year. When was the last time your house was treated for termites? What product was used for the treatment? Do you have an active termite contract? What are the signs of termite infestation that you need to be able to recognize if you see them? What kinds of things can you do, or allow to happen, that increase the risk of your building being infested by termites?  
 
The Mississippi State University Extension Service has recently activated a web site devoted specifically to termites and how to protect homes and buildings from these damaging insects. This site provides detailed information on a variety of termite related topics, including how to identify termites and signs of termite infestation; how to protect buildings from being infested by termites; how to control termites in buildings that are infested; information on termite biology; the different species of termites that occur in Mississippi; conducive conditions that make a building more susceptible to termites; and common questions homeowners have about termites.
