Extension hosts clinics for 4-H Horse Show classes
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Mississippi State University Extension Service will host four clinics for 4-H'ers interested in competing in two new performance classes at the 2017 Mississippi 4-H Horse Show.
Extension equine specialist Clay Cavinder will be the primary instructor at the workshops, which will teach 4-H members the rules and scope of the two classes: Ranch Handling and Cow Horse Boxing.
Extension will hold the clinics at various sites around the state: Montgomery County Coliseum, Winona, March 17; Lincoln County Multipurpose Center, Brookhaven, March 18; Chickasaw County Agri-Center, Houston, April 1; Forrest County Multipurpose Center, Hattiesburg, May 13.
Clinics are designed to help contestants develop an understanding of judging criteria for the new classes, improve training methods and communication with their horses, and understand the proper positioning and handling of cattle.
Each clinic costs $30 and is limited to 20 riders. The clinics will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch is provided and sponsored by Nutrena.

District 4-H horse shows are scheduled for June 8-10 in the northwest, southeast and southwest 4-H districts. The northeast 4-H district’s show is June 7-10. The 4-H Horse Show Championship is June 20-24 in Jackson.
