MSU Row Crop Short Course set for Dec. 2-4
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Cotton leafroll dwarf virus is capable of causing significant yield loss and was reported for the first time in Mississippi earlier this year.
The implications of this disease will be a major focus of the 2019 Mississippi State University Row Crop Short Course Dec. 2-4 at the Cotton Mill Conference Center in Starkville. This course is hosted by the MSU Extension Service and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station.
MSU pathologists Tom Allen and Tessie Wilkerson will join researchers from peer universities in the Southeast to cover the history and management strategies of the cotton leafroll dwarf virus at length.
Other topics will include insect thresholds, bollworm management in soybean, herbicide programs in Mississippi row crops, farming after the south Delta flood of 2019, agricultural policy and trade, and nutrient uptake in irrigated corn and soybean.
Speakers include industry and row crop specialists from universities in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Arkansas and South Carolina.
The Row Crop Short Course was initiated in 1983 as the Cotton Short Course. The program was expanded in 2009 to accommodate growers of other row crops. Attendance topped 700 in 2018, a first for the event.
The course offers Certified Crop Adviser continuing education units in pest, crop, nutrient, and soil and water management. Pesticide applicator recertification credits are also available, along with consultant license renewals in entomology, plant pathology and weed control.
Preregister by Nov. 27 to receive all meals free of charge by visiting the registration site. Information on lodging and a program schedule are also available on that web page. Registration after Nov. 27 costs $40.
The conference center is located at 100 Mercantile Lane in Starkville.
